Penile Enlargement Myths vs Facts

When it comes to penile enlargement, it can be hard to tell what is a legitimate, effective method and which is pseudoscience (or worse, dangerous). Penile enlargement encompasses a variety of different treatments that enhance the length or girth of the penis. These can include injections, creams, or devices, each with its own claimed benefits. They often state that they can help you achieve permanent effects, are “doctor-approved,” can improve your performance in bed, and more. However, scientific evidence and research often do not support these claims.

This resource will help you learn more about the most common myths relating to penile enlargement.

About Penile Enlargement

Penile enlargement includes different products, treatments, and procedures that can increase the length or girth of the penis. The media has perpetuated and reinforced the concept that “the bigger, the better,” convincing many that their anatomy is below average, when in reality, it is average or even above average! (1)

As a result, many men fall for the over-promising advertisements of penile enlargement. Because many of these treatments do not have the backing of research or scientific evidence, they can result in unwanted complications and, in more severe cases, health concerns.

Penile Enlargement Myths vs Facts

Many myths and misconceptions about penile enlargement exist. Some companies may try to sell you unapproved products that are “doctor-approved,” or you may see an online post discussing the newest treatment available. While these enlargement methods may be attractive or easily accessible, they often rely on myths and misconceptions to sell their products, rather than facts or research. They typically focus on how these treatments work, the longevity of their effects, or how they can enhance your sexual function, leading you to believe that they provide effects they cannot.

1. “Penis Fillers are FDA-Approved”

When researching penis fillers, it is common to see claims stating that certain fillers have FDA approval or are safe for other uses beyond facial and hand rejuvenation. While there are several FDA-approved dermal fillers, each with its own indications and benefits, none currently have FDA approval for penile enlargement. (2)

2. “Enlarging Your Penis Can Improve Your Sex Life”

Many men think that enlarging the penis can improve their ability to achieve and maintain an erection, as well as their sexual satisfaction. However, altering your penile tissues and structure can actually inhibit your sexual functionality.

Certain procedures or filler materials can restrict blood flow or damage your local nerves, making it painful or difficult to achieve and sustain an erection. These materials can lead to recurrent inflammation and infections, but they may also migrate to the scrotal tissues and surround your testicles. (3)

3. “Only Men With Small Penises Undergo Treatments”

One of the biggest misconceptions about penile enlargement is that only men with small penises or men with micropenises receive penile enlargement treatments. In reality, many men who undergo these treatments have normal-sized penises. These patients tend to have “small penis syndrome,” which is a term in medical literature that describes excessive worry about size and often overestimating the average length. These insecurities may be about their length, girth, or the ability to satisfy their partner, even if they have not faced any concerns with sexual functionality. (1)

About Removing Your Penile Filler

If you have previously received penis filler in an attempt to enlarge the length or girth of your penis, Dr. Bidair can discuss possible removal!

Penile filler removal is a procedure that reverses the effects of your previous injections and restores the natural appearance and functionality of your penis. Dr. Bidair can perform this procedure to address numerous concerns, including the unsafe nature of penis fillers, the development of complications, dissatisfying aesthetics, and more.

How to Prepare for Penis Filler Removal

Once you have scheduled your procedure, Dr. Bidair will give you a set of personalized instructions to help you prepare. While they will vary, you can expect him to direct you to:

  • Avoid Certain Medications: Refrain from using any blood-thinning medications or supplements leading up to your appointment.
  • Cease Any Substance Use: Stop consuming any alcohol or nicotine in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Arrive Prepared: Please arrive at your appointment on time with loose, breathable, comfortable undergarments and clothing.

Penis Filler Removal Procedure

The details of your procedure will vary depending on whether you initially received hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers.

Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating substance that naturally occurs in the body. It is a common active ingredient in temporary dermal fillers and produces a soft, natural look and feel. This filler can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, and it is the only dermal filler that can be dissolved once it is administered. (4)

On the other hand, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a type of permanent dermal filler. This filler suspends PMMA microspheres in bovine collagen, and upon injection, the microspheres stimulate the fibroblasts to produce new collagen. (5)

Removing Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

If you received HA-based fillers, hyaluronidase injections can dissolve them.

Removing PMMA Fillers

If you received PMMA fillers, you will need to undergo surgical intervention to remove them. Dr. Bidair will first cleanse your skin and administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Sedation is provided using Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). He will place small incisions along your penis to access the underlying mass before carefully removing the solidified gel from your penis. Dr. Bidair will then close the incisions using fine sutures before dressing the area to protect it.

Recovery and Results

After Dr. Bidair has removed your filler, he will release you home to continue resting. When he does, he will provide you with a personalized recovery plan to help guide you through each phase.

You can expect swelling and/or bruising throughout your initial healing phase, but these effects will subside as you continue to recover. You may also develop some general discomfort or tenderness, which you may manage using prescribed medications. You will also need to refrain from engaging in any physically demanding tasks or sexual activities for approximately 4 to 6 weeks, or until Dr. Bidair allows you to resume.

Once you have fully recovered, you will be able to enjoy the improved appearance, function, and comfort of your penis. These effects can contribute to a greater sense of body positivity and self-confidence, allowing you to lead your life the way you want. Risks of removing penile fillers, particularly PMMA, include continued nodular feeling, new scarring, or change in sensation due to the inflammatory response elicited by PMMA. Risks and benefits are discussed in detail during the preoperative consultation.

Cost of Penile Filler Removal in San Diego

The cost of your filler removal will vary depending on several aspects of your treatment plan, such as the amount and type of filler Dr. Bidair is removing. When he meets with you to establish your treatment plan, he will also provide a comprehensive cost estimate.
