Before and After Photos
24 to 48 Hours Post-Op
Dr. Bidair completes all circumcisions by closing the incisions with dissolvable sutures and wrapping the newly exposed skin in a bandage. Dr. Bidair performs circumcisions with a local anesthetic, so you will still be numb, but not groggy as with other forms of anesthesia. However, immediately following your circumcision, we recommend you go straight home. Dr. Bidair prescribes pain medication to help with any lingering discomfort. If you do take OTC pain medicine, avoid any that thin the blood as these will lead to excessive bleeding in the area and delay healing. In the next 24 to 48 hours, you will need to take the dressing off your penis. This dressing may fall off naturally during this time. But, we will also give you personalized instructions on when and how to take off the bandage, depending on the type of circumcision you received. If you’re worried about how the dressing might look underneath your pants, don’t be! It is a lightweight wrap that won’t cause friction while walking or make a bulge in your pants. For comprehensive after-care instructions, we give our patients a list to follow upon leaving our care.
Lay Low
For the first few weeks, lay low. Kick your feet up and take this as an opportunity to focus on less strenuous activities or hobbies. Does your car need to go to the shop? Take it in and let the professionals handle the repairs. Does your email inbox need to be decluttered? Sit down and unsubscribe from all those spam emails! Does your garage full of heavy boxes need reorganizing? Slow down there. Because the incisions and newly exposed skin will need time to heal properly, we recommend avoiding all strenuous activities for the next few weeks.
Exercising
One of the most popular questions Dr. Bidair receives is: when can I get back in the gym? Since most workouts include heavy lifting or quick movements, we recommend skipping the gym for the next few weeks. Most workouts result in some degree of friction around the crotch, so Dr. Bidiar generally advises to stay clear of the gym until the sutures have dissolved fully. We will give you a more personalized answer to your unique situation during your initial consultation.
Give the Boys Some Space
Too much pressure on the stitches can irritate the treated area and disrupt the sutures from healing properly. To avoid this dilemma, we recommend opting for light, loose-fitting pants to allow for some space in your nether regions. So, skip the skinny jeans for at least 3 days and switch to pants with more room to breathe.
Boxers or Briefs?
If you are a proud boxer-loyalist, we recommend going out to buy a few pairs of briefs before your procedure. While studies have shown that half of men choose boxers over the field,[1] boxers don’t keep the penis and testicles secure during daily activities, resulting in more friction to the area than briefs. For men who are recovering from circumcision, this rubbing can irritate the treated area and cause severe discomfort. This can go so far as to interfere with the healing process entirely. So, keep the boxers in the dresser for the next few days.
The Question On Everyone’s Mind
If you’re thinking about circumcision, you’re definitely not the only one with questions. Questions about what happens in the bedroom afterward are on the top of every guy’s (and their partners’) mind. Healthy men experience on average 3-5 nighttime erections.[2] However, erections in the first few days following surgery might be detrimental to the healing process and cause sometimes severe discomfort. While nighttime erections are difficult to avoid, we recommend taking a walk when you experience unexpected arousal during the day. Walking will help mitigate blood flow from the penis to other areas of the body.
When Is It Okay To Have Sex?
After your circumcision, any type of friction will be painful and disruptive to the healing process. So, we recommend forgoing intercourse for the next two to four weeks. Take this time to focus on her and discover what satisfies her –– or, you know, pick up a book.
Is Adult Circumcision Right For Me?
Deciding to undergo circumcision as an adult can be a no-brainer for some patients and a more complex decision for others. Pain or Discomfort?
Balanitis & balanoposthitis are urological conditions where the head of the penis or the foreskin becomes inflamed, irritated, or infected. These conditions happen because the foreskin either gets trapped by the head of the penis or because of hygenic issues. These conditions can be very painful and often result in a very red and irritated-looking penis.
