About Frenuloplasty

A frenuloplasty is a procedure designed to lengthen or loosen the frenulum, or the band of tissue on the underside of the penis that connects the head (glans) to the foreskin (prepuce). (1) The frenulum provides support to the penis while also functionally allowing the foreskin to contract. This area can be very sensitive to some, making it an erogenous zone, but can also cause pain during an erection or sexual activity, as well as premature ejaculation if it is too short or tight. (2) Men can either be born with a naturally tight frenulum, a condition known as Frenulum Breve, or the skin may tighten later in life due to injury or other trauma. No matter what the cause, these issues can be addressed with a frenuloplasty.

Benefits of Frenuloplasty

There are many benefits patients may experience after undergoing a frenuloplasty. Benefits may include:

  • Improved Comfort: A frenuloplasty helps lengthen the frenulum, alleviating any discomfort or pain that occurs during sexual activity.
  • Enhanced Functionality: This procedure allows the skin to become more flexible, improving one’s ability to maintain and achieve erections.
  • Reduced Invasiveness: A frenuloplasty only addresses the frenulum, preserving the integrity of the foreskin.
  • Quick Duration: A frenuloplasty is quick to perform, often being completed within half an hour.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for a frenuloplasty include those who may be experiencing pain, irritation, or discomfort due to a restrictive frenulum. Men experiencing Frenulum Breve, a condition that causes a short and tight frenulum, are recommended for this procedure to alleviate any restricted movement. (1) Individuals experiencing recurrent tearing during intercourse, as well as those with difficulties retracting their foreskin, may also find this procedure beneficial. Patients interested in enhancing their sexual function may also be eligible for a frenuloplasty.

All candidates interested in a frenuloplasty procedure should be in good overall health, free of any underlying medical conditions. Patients should also be nonsmoking, or willing to quit for the duration of the procedure. Dr. Bidair will assess each individual’s candidacy at their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step to comfort is attending a consultation with Dr. Bidair. This consultation is not only a chance for our team to get to know each patient on a more personal level, but also to better understand how we can best help. Dr. Bidair will first discuss the details of frenuloplasty with each patient, before learning more about their medical history, concerns, and treatment goals.

After collecting the information he needs, Dr. Bidair will craft their customized treatment plan. Each aspect of the procedure will be tailored to help address their concerns and maximize each potential benefit. Pre-operative and post-operative guidelines will also be provided alongside an all-inclusive cost. We ask that patients prepare questions for their consultation, as this is time specifically dedicated to them and their procedure.

We also offer phone consultations for out-of-state and international patients.

Preparation

Dr. Bidair will provide each patient with a set of preparatory guidelines at their personal consultation, instructing them on how to prepare for their frenuloplasty procedure. While the preparation is not extensive, patients should still follow any instructions given by Dr. Bidair or another member of our team to ensure the best possible outcome.

Patients may be instructed to temporarily discontinue the use of certain medications or supplements, especially those with blood-thinning properties. Additionally, patients should cease the use of nicotine, as well as the consumption of alcohol, several weeks before their procedure to help minimize complications.

Procedure

Each frenuloplasty will begin with the cleansing and sterilization of the treatment area. Local anesthesia will be administered to ensure each patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Bidair will then make a tiny incision in the frenulum to help lengthen it. Depending on the needs of each patient, the frenulum may also be reshaped in a way that allows for greater flexibility. Dr. Bidair will then use dissolvable sutures to carefully close the incision. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is often completed in less than half an hour.

Recovery

Dr. Bidair will give each patient a set of post-operative instructions to help facilitate a smooth recovery. Swelling and tenderness can be expected in the treated area, but these effects will gradually subside. Any discomfort can be managed through the use of pain medications, under the guidance of Dr. Bidair.

Patients will need to avoid sexual activity or autoerotism for several weeks to allow the tissue to heal. Additionally, activities or tighter-fitting underwear that may cause friction or chafing near the frenulum should be avoided. Dr. Bidair may ask patients to return to the office for follow-up visits so that our team can monitor their recovery. As patients continue to recover, any visible scarring will gradually fade, often becoming barely noticeable.

Results

The full results of each patient’s frenuloplasty can be seen after several weeks after any residual swelling has dissipated. Patients will be able to experience an improvement in their daily comfort and function as any tightness or pain is eliminated. A greater amount of foreskin mobility can also be experienced, in addition to a reduced risk of tearing or scarring. Men often find that a frenuloplasty can also enhance their sexual function and pleasure. Patients often report a high satisfaction rate after undergoing this procedure, with many seeing an improvement in not only their confidence but overall quality of life. (3)

Corresponding Procedures

There are many procedures that can be performed alongside a frenuloplasty to create more comprehensive results, including our adult circumcision procedure. An adult circumcision is a procedure that removes the male prepuce, or foreskin, for both health and cosmetic benefits. This procedure is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide. (4) A circumcision can further alleviate feelings of discomfort and tightness from the foreskin and frenulum while also improving one’s hygiene. Dr. Bidair can also perform both of these procedures in one sitting, meaning patients can experience a single downtime. Recovery times from combined procedures are often shorter in comparison to if the procedures were performed separately.

This procedure is typically performed in 15 to 30 minutes but may vary in duration if additional procedures are performed.

Will I lose any sensitivity after undergoing a frenuloplasty?

Will I have any visible scarring after my frenuloplasty?

While there will be minimal scarring, it will be discreet and easily hideable. Any scarring will gradually fade until it is barely noticeable.

Can I combine my frenuloplasty with another procedure?

Yes, a frenuloplasty can be combined with another one of our treatments for more comprehensive results. We recommend learning more about our adult circumcision procedure to get started.
