About Circumcision

Surgically removing the foreskin offers many different benefits. Adults may seek circumcision for personal preference, medical concerns, or hygiene issues. (1, 2) Circumcision can also heighten self-esteem and confidence by aligning your appearance with your aesthetic preferences.

Choosing the Right Doctor for Circumcision

Circumcision procedures are very personal, and choosing the right doctor for your procedure is important for achieving optimal results. Dr. Bidair is an experienced urologist who can perform your circumcision with precision and ensure the process helps you achieve your desired look. He makes careful incisions to minimize downtime and scarring. Dr. Bidair will provide you with all the information you need to care for your circumcision scar and ensure a smooth recovery as well.

Dr. Bidair can perform several different types of circumcision, all of which incise excess skin and suture it into place:

Regardless of the type of circumcision you receive, you will receive a bandage that you should remove 48 hours after the procedure. Dr. Bidair will also provide specific recovery instructions based on the methods used in your circumcision:

  • Sleeve Method: If your foreskin is naturally loose, Dr. Bidair can make an incision beneath the shaft of the penis to remove tissue along its circumference.
  • Proximal Circumcision Method: With a proximal incision, Dr. Bidair will remove skin from the base of your penis and reposition it to expose the head (glans).
  • Dorsal Slit Technique: If your foreskin is naturally tight, Dr. Bidair will use a special type of incision perpendicular to the ridge of the foreskin to tighten and retract it.

Circumcision Recovery

Your recovery from circumcision is important for achieving optimal results and reducing the risk of complications after surgery. Adult circumcision typically requires more extensive healing due to increased skin thickness and sensitivity. It is common to experience bruising and swelling for a number of days afterward. Some patients have bruising along the shaft of the penis in the areas where we administer local anesthesia. Circumcision recovery involves careful attention to hygiene practices, pain management, and wound care. For optimal results, you should:

  • Schedule downtime: Depending on the complexity of your procedure, you will need 1-2 weeks of downtime from strenuous activities after circumcision.
  • Maintain good hygiene: Showering regularly after circumcision is important for preventing the risk of infection.
  • Avoid physical intimacy: You will need to avoid physical intimacy for several weeks, typically 3- 4, to allow your skin to heal.
  • Pick up prescriptions: We recommend picking up prescriptions ahead of time and preparing your meals for a comfortable recovery.
  • Create a comfortable space to recover: Cleaning your home and creating a space where you feel safe and comfortable to rest in is also important for an effective recovery.
  • Arrange for support: We recommend asking an adult you trust to check on you for the first 24-48 hours after your procedure.
  • Stop drinking temporarily: You should stop drinking alcohol for 24-48 hours after your procedure while your skin heals for optimal results.
  • Refrain from smoking temporarily: If applicable, you should refrain from smoking after circumcision since nicotine can affect your recovery process.

After Your Treatment

After a circumcision, you should wear tight underwear to minimize movement of the shaft. You may choose loose-fitting outer clothing for 2-3 days to prevent chafing or any other irritation.

You will be able to urinate, but you will need to be gentle with your body while you heal. If you experience any discomfort while urinating, you should contact our office.

In the Bedroom

You must avoid sexual activity for 3-4 weeks after circumcision to allow your skin to heal properly and avoid complications. If you experience an erection, we recommend taking a walk to stimulate blood flow, and we can prescribe medications to help you alleviate discomfort. Although erections can be uncomfortable, they can help your penis heal properly. After your skin heals, you must use a condom for 2-3 months to reduce your risk of contracting STIs.

Benefits of Proper Recovery

Following your recovery instructions closely can help you enjoy several benefits, including:

  • Minimal scarring: Caring for your incisions can reduce the risk of skin irritation and scarring.
  • Improved hygiene: Without the foreskin, maintaining proper hygiene becomes easier.
  • Improved sexual health: Circumcision can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted illnesses.
  • Enhanced quality of life: Removing the foreskin can reduce the risk of long-term health conditions such as cancer, HIV, or other STIs.
  • Improved confidence: Selecting a circumcision that you feel good about can improve your self-esteem and quality of life.
